Defence 10.7%; pensions 0.25%
- The General Budgets submitted by a Government are often the mirror of its system of values and ideology. In the case of the Spanish State, which also affects the Basques of Hegoalde, it reflects very well this system of values: it is a neoliberal government at the service of the capital and of the great powers such as the United States, which increasingly contributes to the military organisation NATO.
If we are faced with increases in military spending and pensions, everything is said. The defence budget is the second largest, with a total of EUR 8,453 million, an increase of EUR 819 million, 10.7% this year. On the contrary, pensions in the Basque Autonomous Community will rise by 0.25% and will not change. After the mobilisations, the minimum pensions will rise a little… and will remain insignificant. The scandal is compounded when budget executors, such as Rajoy and its ministers, as MEPs and senators, are going to raise the salary by 1.5%.
Their values are also highlighted with the heading against child poverty, which has reduced the promised EUR 1.5 billion to EUR 346 million. The same is true of the low growth of 0.5% to promote equality between men and women: In 2017, €19.74 million have been accounted for and in 2018 it will be €19.84 million. The budget of the King’s House will rise by 0.9% – almost eight million euros – the budget of the Council of State by 4.9%… And the presidents of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court will receive the highest salaries of the State: the first 134,760 euros a year, the second 149,007 euros. The State is able to pay well to those who have to decide on their policies. It is logical that the pensioners who have been miserably harassed should cry out in the street: “There’s no money left, there’s plenty of burglars!”
