Two popular stories are pictured in this beautiful book called Mainamikirri: The king's daughter and the Black Cats, both, as seen in the credits, popular accounts of Burunda and collected from a recording made in 1986 by Izaskun Etxeberria.
Stories are written oral narratives, stories that can be read aloud, and as often happens in popular stories, they are little descriptions, many activities, and many interviews. The king's daughter begins: “Once there were five cleaners who went to the mill to wash their clothes. / The smallest was Mainamikirri and the witches./ One morning, while they were in the mill, one asked: / – Girls, are we all here? “No, Mainamikiri is missing,” said another. “It’s always. But as soon as Mainamikir appears, the peace of mind is over; Mainamikirri tells them that the king’s daughter is very ill, but she knows what needs to be done to cure her (collecting the foam of a horse on the sheet…). The fact is that while the women were chatting, a curious woman heard everything and cured the king's daughter, whom she received a beautiful amount of money.
The next day, Mainamikirri and his friends, before starting their departure, walked around and made grimaces to catch the myrrh and molt it in the mill. The hombrecillo ran away… and it looks like it’s still running!
Black cats are also a traditional Basque tale related to witchcraft; and like the previous one, a story that can be read and heard very easily.
The great illustrations of Morkots further draw the reader to follow stories. The illustrator plays with the images and blanks to increase the reader's attention and images, although it reflects the environment of a long time, it has managed to reach the present day.
Both his stories and his illustrations Mainamikirri makes a very attractive book, bringing the past to the present, to build the future. And in this respect, the only pity is that this book can only be acquired in the region in which it has been created and has a very limited dissemination.
The work done by Fanietorri is very commendable, as has been done by many municipalities and institutions; I hope that this work and other similar ones will be in the editorial that will disseminate them throughout the Basque Country.
