Celiac, "intestinal patients"
- In the last quarter of a century, the number of celiacs has multiplied by five. In part, because consumer habits have changed, but most importantly, it's now diagnosed a lot more.
The disease is not new; Cappadocia Areteo (in the image). In the broad medical treatise written in the 1st century he devoted a whole section to “celiac disease”. Areteo himself named him: he called the koiliac patients or “intestinal patients”.
According to the Greek physician, celiacs "do not retain food", which was due to "the scarcity of natural heat" they suffered. At that time they believed that this “natural heat” within the stomach was essential to absorb food.
Twenty-two centuries later, we know that celiacs have permanent intolerance to gluten.
