The narrative collections of Arantxa Iturbe have often referred to incommunication: they focus on misunderstandings, undecided, silenced. It already exists in the Hau gero collection. But they mainly refer to the rituals and codes that arise in the exchange.
The collection consists of twenty-nine scenes and short pieces, where the unit is perceived in shades, environments, rhythms and perspectives. In all the narrative pieces we are represented by the people who are with us every day (family members, colleagues, couples, seniors and caregivers…). The vision of the world of the characters crumbles in these narratives, because the image of the neighbor is crumbling: a gesture generates distrust, a conversation makes a new edge of the personality visible… The spirits and imperceptible intentions of the neighbor become blind angles, a wall of rapprochement, a source of suspicion. The image of the neighbor in the question and also that of the protagonists, since the neighbor is the mirror par excellence in the construction of identity. In front of the broken mirror, they will take very different paths: to maintain the effort of reconstructing the mirror, to cling to the search for new mirrors, to freeze in the wounds produced by broken crystals…
To tell these ruptures a concrete point of view has been addressed: most narrators have formed a cold and distant voice, with little affection. And that is that the need to act with sense and prudence leads the characters to blindness, rooted in oneself, and they can't put themselves in the skin of the other. Through this coldness he has built the strongest arguments (Profanation, Home, Therapy, Door, Gaze, Wager).
In many narratives it has created blind angles, many silences and ellipses. A very appropriate technique for creating surprises and blows, but as a result of the jumps, I found it difficult to follow the thread of some narratives at first reading (Potros, Pena, Invitation). At the second reading, however, I identified the voices well and observed that the threads were well sewn. Therefore, in many narratives it has turned the image of broken mirrors into a narrative technique, as it has often given rise to broken codes (conversations, sequences of narrative elements, jumps…) and invites us to sew pieces.
