They have been organizing for years in Amorebieta-Etxano the trade fair for women farmers and artisans. The market began in 1971 and this year will be the 21st edition, on 3 March. “The initiative was a pioneer in its day at the women’s fair,” explains Equality Councilor Alicia Hernández Cid. The initiative is part of the International Day of Working Women, which is held on 8 March.
The initiative, which is part of the Local Plan for Equality, aims to be a tool for the empowerment of women. “The aim of the fair is also to boost the visibility of women in culture and society,” adds Hernández Cid. In fact, Amorebieta-Etxano became the place of the women producers of Euskal Herria that day of the year, they are the main and unique protagonists.
If in the first years the participants were mainly women of the people, over the years producers from all over the Basque Country approached. The main condition of the fair is that all products are produced and sold by women resident in the Basque Country. “The evolution of these years has been very positive. Women’s empowerment is becoming apparent in sectors such as food, clothing or jewelry,” explains Hernández Cid.
On March 3, whoever approaches Amorebieta-Etxano will have a lot to see and taste. Bread, duck, sweets, jams, homemade hamburgers, vegetables, cheese and dairy, jewelry, leather, ceramics, soaps, clothing, wood, flowers, aesthetic products. The visitor will have endless possibilities to fill the shopping pot.
In addition to the market offer, the organizers will open the txosnas area and during the morning there will be actions of txistularis, trikitilaris, dantzaris and bertsolaris.
