The Adventures of Ossezno
I would say that we have one of the flaws in our literature in the comic book. We have a very small tradition of reading comics (in Hegoalde) and there are very few publications of this kind in Basque, that is why we are grateful for the commitment and effort of the well-known Bilbain Astiberri comic house to publish some of its works also in Basque.
Waluk is the last contribution in this field. One of the collaborations between Emilio Ruiz and Ana Miralles. This work, with Ruiz’s script and images of Miralles, begins with a preamble by Ruiz in which the writer addresses a question: “What is your favorite animal?” and after talking about different animals, Ruiz tells us: “I don’t want the bears of the Arctic to disappear. The white bear is my favorite animal.”
And Waluk, an Arctic seismic, is the protagonist of this story. Let's wait for the mother not to come into the ice hole. And after you've come out of your hole, you'll have to face the world, the wild and hard world. At first alone and later next to the great Esquimo bear.
Waluk shows us the daily lives of these beautiful and great animals, how they should be fed, how they face enemies and other animals, how human presence has influenced their territory. Pollution, tourism, destruction or research by scientists, among other things, will bring us to these entertaining and commendable stories. Stories full of adventures, because we can see our character in very different situations, of starvation, playing, prisoner…
It is true that animals are the main protagonists of this book, but through these animals, or thanks to them, we should say, we can reflect on human behavior. The Earth, in this case the Arctic, allows us to see how it is deteriorating thanks to the eyes, the reflections and the attitudes we take.
And also how these animals are changing because of human actions. This book, very well translated by Bego Montoro (published in the same house in 2011), is the tenth level of an Astiberri comic book chain. A chain that will increasingly be longer and more complete!
