The Bittersweet Account of War
It is often said that reality outweighs fiction. And in those cases, counting and making reality credible through fiction is not an easy task. This novel tells a strange story of the time of war that might seem incredible, but that starts from a real fact. This is the kidnapping and leakage of the Archbishop of Valladolid. However, the tone chosen to turn that event into fiction makes the book special: it looks like a grotesque narrative between tragedy and comedy.
Go down the road from comic book to drama, unraveling the ridiculous situations of the beginnings and showing the cruelty of war.
The humor touch of the mold is obtained through three resources. On the one hand, caricaturizing the ideological journey of some characters. On the other hand, highlighting the inconsistencies of some characters who are in the anarchist movement. Finally, bringing some events to the end. In addition, the confusion of historical characters with the comic narrative can produce astonishment, emotion, smile or anguish in the reader, especially when situations reach the absurd.
On the other hand, in this conflictive context the character of Carmen stands out, whose adventures make one of the few female entrepreneurs in the 1936 War Novel. It is precisely the one who has the ability to change the direction of history: on the one hand, because it provokes the end of the crazy anarchist, and on the other, because, giving him an exceptional image of woman, he does what they do not dare to shoot the leader and beat the soldiers. However, the representation of the female character shows that warfare is caused by impulses and feelings, as it is suggested that the ideological reason starts from a loving vengeance.
In this novel we can see the hand of the writer, trained in the world of the story, in the plasticity of the images, in the lack of depth in the psychological aspect of the characters, in the variety of the actions and in the intrigue of the final chapter. The reader is asked to tie a few hairs and, in return, it is intended to become an accomplice at the end of the novel, since the public statement offered to the archbishop by the national mayor of San Sebastian acquires a meaning that will only be understood by those who have read the story, leaving the ignorance of the mayor evident.
