We have recently seen the worrying results of Basque education. Recently, the PISA (International Student Assessment Programs) report gave us the first slap, as our students got very poor results. Because we were led to believe that from the Basque Government the teaching here was of a very high level, an “oasis” in the Spanish State, but those poor results have put us where it belongs.

It's no wonder why these results are. We must not forget that since 2009 our education budgets have been suffering huge cuts. There is little public money for education, much less for public education, although the propagandists who support the government want us to believe the opposite. But in vain, because the data is there.

For decades, we were convinced that education would offer us equality in future opportunities and that the sons and daughters of a humble worker would have opportunities to access any job. It doesn't matter if I was born poor or rich, because education would put every individual on the same level. The consequence of this policy was the legitimization of the state or capitalist society, but that great lie has been constantly revealed in our society and while the descendants of the rich come to the elite schools, institutes, lyceums and universities, the children of the workers have only to go to the mass and ordinary centers. These elite centres strengthen relations between rich families and work on facilities for tomorrow, opening up avenues for adequate jobs.

The Finnish education system is constantly being mentioned. However, instead of mimicking the Finnish education budget, they reduce the one here; instead of leading the tests to choose the best teachers, anyone can become a teacher; instead of reducing the number of students per classroom, it increases to 35-40; instead of reinforcing and encouraging teachers in society, those responsible for education look elsewhere at the mistreatment they receive, rather than suddenly replacing the sick teacher with three days.

And there's public money in activities. Spanish Defense, Security, Casa Real, Foreign Affairs expenses or state public debt; in addition, there are funds to pay San Mamés Barria, Anoeta, TAV without rationality, San Sebastian metro, etc. Meanwhile, the 2009 general education expenditure, the highest to date, amounted to EUR 2,832 million and this level will not be reached in 2018, as it will be EUR 2,665 million.

In this situation, our students arrive at the universities and, unfortunately, have a very low reading level, a very low level of understanding and poor communicative competence. It is not surprising, therefore, that it is not known who was the Basque classic that Gero wrote, what Einstein worked or that the main driver of the Basque Country batua was Txillardegi.

In recent times, this problem is being addressed transparently through the education unions. That is why I see it necessary for parents and unions to come together to improve the education system. Otherwise, the future of the Basques will be dark.

In short, as the children of our rulers study in prestigious centers, paying for expensive tuition, no matter the educational level of the descendants of humble citizens, we will be preparing children for slavery. However, we have a lot to worry about.
