Eight types of drunks
- London 1592. Thomas Nashe (1567-1601), a satirical writer of the Renaissance, published the pamphlet Pierce Penilesse his Supplication to the Divell (poor devil Pierce pleading the devil). Two years later I would write the first picaresque novel in English The Unfortunate Traveller, but success would be achieved by the polemic with that 1592 satirical pamphlet.
Gabriel and Richard Harvey critiqued the work of Nashe and his friend Robert Green. Nash wrote the pamphlet in response to his brothers’ intemperances, which only increased his dispute. The conflict between the writers lasted until 1599, when the Church of England decided to intervene, prohibiting the enemies from continuing fighting and definitively closing the controversy.
In addition to ridiculing his brothers Harvey (or indirectly, to keep making him comical), Nash received in Pierce Penilessen a strange list describing the eight types of drunks he had identified with animals.
“The first kind of drunk is a monkey that is jumping, singing, screaming and dancing.”
He compared second-class drunkenness to the lion. “It confuses everything, insults others, breaks things up and tends to revolt anyone who speaks to it.”
The third drunkard looks like the pig. “It’s heavy, it’s half asleep and cries for more drinks.”
The fourth behaves in a similar way to sheep: “It’s prudent, it settles until it finds the right word.”
Use the duck to describe the fifth type of drunk: “It’s sweet and friendly, and it kisses whoever has next to him, telling him what he loves, and that he will love him forever, even if the other doesn’t want him again.”
The gift of sixth drunkenness from the chimpanzee is amazing. “Drink and drink until you become drunk and continue to drink until you become drunk.”
The seventh is the goat. “When you get drunk, you only think about lascivia.”
Finally, fox type drunks: “Very common in the Dutch, it makes the drinks faster and more imaginative.”
Just over four centuries later, the Nashe Zoo is still alive among us.
