The composer Georg Friedrich Händel, born in Germany (Halle), achieved success and fame in England, where he composed his wonderful sacred music.
However, despite having grown up as a musician in the adoption village, the German base was there, in its most important works. A clear example of this is the famous Messiah. This work, composed in 1741, has its roots in the tradition of the old German passions and cantatas. It premiered in Dublin in 1742 with great success, not only for the musical inspiration of the teacher, but also for the libretto. The text was written by Charles Jennens. It is about the relationship between God and man, and also about the mystery of Redemption. Although Messiah is scheduled at all Christmas parties, it is always a real pleasure to listen to this work. Even more so when we have the highest interpreters in front of us.
The King’s Consort group specialises in baroque music and is undoubtedly one of the best in the world in its style. Founded in 1980 by the director Robert King, from then on, this group and choir of instruments of the time has received only applause.
The truth is that in Euskal Herria we know very well the group The King’s Consort, and that is why we were not surprised before that perfection. It's cierto.El Messiah is a complicated job. A huge balance and millimetric accuracy are necessary to carry out this work successfully. But in the hands of this team, it seems very easy.
In the instrumental aspect, musicality was the main characteristic. Despite using the instruments of the time, the result is sweet and very balanced. The voices became more and more solemn.
And the same can be said of the choir. They did so delicately, with a phrasing full of nuances and exceptional expressiveness.
The soloists were also at a high level. Soprano Lorna Anderson sang radiant, with a nice quick record. Contralto Hilary Summers made an elegant interpretation, albeit with little projection. Tenor Joshua Elliott, for his part, showed the right timbre for this work. And perhaps the surprise of the program was that of lower Henry Woddington, who replaced David Wilson Johnson, who was supposed to happen. At every instant, his voice was very ductile and colorful. All right.
