A California for all
Not leaving the United States, California. No to Trump, we're in 1992, let's call Disneyland -- Bushland. Joseba Gabilondo, a young man without a beard, who does not have much hair in his mouth, sends letters and publishes them in the Official Gazette of Gipuzkoa (to be more precise, in the Zabalik supplement in Basque): “Either way throw away your own follies and charge them – then I’ve realized that the business is exactly in it.” He wanted to be intellectual (“compensating all the cultural limitations of a completely rural proletarian family”), progressive and politically committed, and also a very cool, i.e. serious and elegant type. “The young man who wanted to be Jean-Paul Sartre has chosen the option of a cultural punk.”
He has been abroad for four and a half years (“and at the moment it has not occurred to me to return”), enough to speak of California as “symbol of the future United States”. The preamble states: “When Gabilondo tells us about California, California only appears on the skin (thank God!).” I do not agree: When Gabilondo tells us about California, California is profoundly shown to us (to whom do we thank? ). We just have to count how many times the word “here” appears. Then it is true that when he talks about California he is talking about the United States and Euskal Herria, and in general about the bitterness and frustration of the end of the twentieth century. California: of utopia, of nostalgia, of the global neighborhood, of violence, of tribal buyers, of happy life without great social ties, of the post-industrial revolution, of hyperspace, of the capitalist exploitation of ever, of exile, of fashion, of the erotic to buy, of the end of the universal times of the Basques; of speaking, of the actions of individuals and of social structures, in short. “Ambassador of the American imperialist cultural invasion,” but trying to “explain from the most rigorous point of view the contradictions and problems of American life”.
And showing that there is a California for all, “even if it’s located in Turkey or Urretxu.” n
