On the way to this day, the Catalan people have not shown much. Courage and dignity. Courage and intelligence. Incessant. However, we knew that sooner or later they would meet the cruel and violent state wall. It was the time for doubt. Capacities to cope with repression. Resist or at least resist.
Well, the referendum on 1 October has passed. It happened and they gave us a new lesson. It is not so easy to stop a multitude of citizens with complete conviction. Despite the difficulties, voters began to fill the polls. Then, after a few steps back, the result was taken into account and the day so long awaited arrived: Parliament proclaimed the Catalan Republic. The State’s response has also been expected: Under the excuse of 155, a coup d'état on the Catalan institutions, imprisonment and persecution.
From there we believed that we were about to see the two-lane road: on the one hand, that of the actions against repression; on the other hand, that of the steps for the materialization of the republic. The first has gained strength. In the face of a total state of emergency, citizens and political representatives are engaged in an anti-repressive response. On the street, mass protests, and institutional representatives in the political denunciation, in attempts to internationalize the conflict and show the authoritarianism of the Spanish State.
Despite the fact that this attitude is perfectly understandable, it is essential for the triumph of the republic that the citizens, as they have so far, believe that it is possible. The conviction that, at all costs, they will achieve it thanks to the strength of the people. The idea that State structures are being built would contribute decisively to this. Even though these are tiny and symbolic things, they mentally lead citizenship to another scenario. People need one more step in the constituent process to keep the flame alert. Despite the plight of the situation, it is important not to spoil the illusion.
Once again, maintaining unity will be fundamental. This is not the time to fall into the ballot box. And maintaining unity does not mean going on a single list at all, but responding to a common country strategy.
The same goes for the December elections. In addition to being an absolutely undemocratic and exceptional call, it is imposing a dangerous discursive framework: Contrarian and favorable blocks to 155. This restores the situation to the time prior to the proclamation of the Catalan Republic. As if the problem were 155 and not the lack of democracy in Spain. This can cause a sense of displeasure that does not suit independence. Once the 155 is passed, the wills must be fulfilled from 156. You'll need a new narrative. If I imagined the blocs, I would prefer: the supporters and opponents of the republic. And that is that it puts citizens in the defense of a republic that already exists mentally, on the way forward. Let the elections serve to give a new guarantee to the Republic at the ballot box.
In addition, it is enough to turn on television to see what the main fears of the Spanish apparatus are: the unity of the independentists and the democratic legitimization. Messages to create and represent a gap between independence parties and representatives are spreading over and over again. Once again, maintaining unity will be fundamental. This is not the time to fall into the ballot box. And maintaining unity does not mean going on a single list, but responding to a common country strategy. More than one will be tempted to surrender, but the path has not gone in vain. Let these last lines serve to send a sack of force to go ahead and keep us as we have done so far. Despair, in addition to yours, would have an irreversible effect for a long time on ours.
