Uneka reminded me of Peru Iparragirre (Toulouse, 1996) and his camera and the changing photographs revealed in his gelatin. Peru Iparragirre would be well aware of nostalgia, and would miss the future in this book. But it also has a classic sense of aesthetics, which makes Bordaxuri think.
This Martin Bidaur never says things too much in detail, and perhaps that is why he gets such astonishing rigor: “As of today I will not have a home in this backpack the parents will not fit in/what they will do with them/they take me already/on the road that no longer goes anywhere”. Return is a mystery wrapped in itself, easily understood. In that beautiful flight that is the return, he writes that the poet wants to stay here.
The internal conflicts and fears, the presence of life and death, everything is here forgotten, through memory: “In childhood/ in Catholic school/ a partner”. Through painful poems and trapping, it tells the personal, and to the same extent tells the world.
That bare realistic lyricism, especially in the part dedicated to Paris, is the most honored, cruel and beautiful poetry I have read lately. It leaves the testimony of the child, of the adolescent and of a man with a healthy and mature poetry. The testimony of the struggle and of the things that it has necessarily led to. The reader does not shake, but gradually goes to a world of impotence, to a hostile account of what has touched us.
Against those who died in the galeras, Martin Bidaur gives up the life and the road ahead. In the last stanzas, he asks: “Once sunburned, is there any way to go back into the shadows// reverse paths/ will it take me nowhere.” The Return comes loaded with questions that do not need any question marks. The return is a book written to hope from outrage.
