He wanted it to continue to work, but popular mobilizations and political opposition have forced him to do so. However, the closure of the nuclear power plant will cause other serious problems, so it is better to be attentive to those that are taking place. The dismantling of the central misery will take 20 years to fall, while that of Vandellós will need twice as much. Experts believe that doing the same with Garoña can cost a lot more, as it is more contaminated by its design. Therefore, the radioactive risk of Garoña will remain alive for decades. That is why it is so necessary to implement as soon as possible a plan to dismantle the plant.
The closure of Garoña means the destruction of almost 300 direct jobs. Spanish and Basque governments and institutions should immediately address a plan for economic recovery in the area, in order to prevent the creation of alternative jobs and the obligation to migrate to the population.
Another problem, not least, is the handling and accumulation of radioactive waste. In the case of Garoña it is 500 metric tons. What will we do with this waste? The project of the radioactive waste warehouse that was to be built in Spain is standing still and the transport of material is very expensive. Authorities may be tempted to open “provisional” warehouses in power plants. They will close Garoña and will not produce nuclear energy, but they can turn it into a store of radioactive waste that is highly polluting and dangerous to the population. Notice, therefore, this is not over. Garoña is still there.
How to close Txernobyl? How to close Fukushima? These two nuclear power plants, after suffering accidents, are still "alive" and no one is calling for their closure. The first has been covered and covered, and the solution has been entrusted to the technological advances that the... [+]
