Composting people will already have learnt the basic rules to achieve satisfactory results. “Mix wet and dry matter in the same volume,” says the guide explaining how to make compost in one of the basic standards. Among these dry materials are, among others, the leaves that cast trees and fill our streets in autumn. In some towns of Euskal Herria they have already begun to take advantage of the leaves collected in the streets and to offer the citizens the possibility of adding them to their own compost. Orio was the last resort to launch the initiative.
The technical architect of the Orio City Hall, Amaia Usandizaga, told us that everything the road cleaning workers had collected up to now was going directly to the landfill. In the autumn, the initiative has been launched with the aim of taking advantage of the large number of leaves that were collected between the rubble of the street. “By distributing, in addition to sending much less material to landfill, we offer citizens the possibility of getting natural fertilizer,” explains Usandizaga.
The road cleaning company of Orio has proposed to the City Hall to collect the leaves separately. In fact, in other localities in the area they provide the same service, and seeing the good reception he has had among the citizens, they thought that Orio could also work well.
“Around the orchards of the Riberas will be placed one or two points, and the leaves that the sweepers collect will leave them there stacked,” explains Usandizaga. Composting sheets can go to anyone you want and collect the amount you need. If not, the interested parties can sign up on a list by calling or going to the City Hall phone, then the cleaning staff will contact them to specify where and when they will leave their sheets. “These are sheets that are collected with the usual cleaning, so, along with the leaves, they may touch some kind of garbage. It will be the task of each user to remove them,” he explains on the website of the City Hall.
Gradually the trees have been losing leaves and the streets have been decorated. For some waste, for other “gifts”, surely everyone will agree that composting is an excellent way to recycle the leaves.
