Have you always had a vocation for the stage?

I've been a very music lover since I was a kid. Every summer we gathered all the premiums and prepared a show with music, dance, theater, announcements… very well prepared and with presenters. I played the guitar and sang.

By then was he already studying music?

When I was 12 years old, I started playing guitar and singing, and when I was 16 or 17, I started composing my first jobs. Parents took their older brother to the conservatory to study music and abandoned him. My sister did the same, and when it came time for me, they didn't try. I started self-taught and we created a group of friends to sing our favorite songs.

How did Demode Quartet emerge?

I started ten years ago with this one, which is my most personal project, together with Patxi Barco. When I was looking for people, it was clear that I wanted extraordinary singers and Euskaldunes. We started the group with Mikel Espinal, Mikel de la Fuente and Iker Huitzi. We thought in a year's time we would be performing concerts, but it wasn't like this: it was a year and a half until the voices started packing and another year preparing the show. In 2010 we premiered the show Demode Quartet and recorded a disc with the same name. In 2013 David Rosco entered by Mikel Espinal and EPA! We made a record where we explained how, in our opinion, musical styles around the world have their origin in Basque music. Now All Musicals have almost a show. In the Gayarre theatre we premiered in February the Spanish version and in May the Basque version in the Main Theatre of Donostia. Here in Pamplona, in Baluarte, we will hold the first session in Basque on 1 December, on the occasion of the Basque Day, organized by the City Hall.

Two versions why?

In the previous show all songs were in Basque and sketches in one language or another. Now everything is in Basque or Spanish, and the songs are also. We've chosen and translated over twenty songs from the world's most famous musicians, with the help of Aiora Zulaika Pirritx. We got into a good salsa! The challenge is to make great music with four people. To achieve this, we use projections, costumes, and everything we can. It's a lot of fun. Miserable, The Lion King, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Wizard of Oze, Cabaret… songs of music for the first time in Basque, at least professionally.

What do you have now in your hands?

We're recording the two albums of this show, and now we're editing them to present them at the Durango Fair. In addition, in October EPA! And almost every musical we will do in Ezkaroze, Orkoien, Lodosa and Mutiloa, among others, and in November we will go to the Cuban Art Factory, Havana, with our first two shows. It is a very nice option. It's not easy to get in. There's a very high level, and although it was already famous, since Obama's wife went to visit him globally, it's been known by more people. There are three or four scenarios and it has become a benchmark for many Latin American artists. It's a very nice place. So far we have moved in Euskal Herria, in Madrid, in La Rioja… but it will be the first time we have left the state.

What about Joli?

After a new show and with the albums going on, I want to resume my personal project. I want to create new compositions and I've recovered some to create a solo show in 2018.

What do you want to sing from?

I don't know what will happen. I myself am changing and in these ten years that I have not created new compositions I have experienced many experiences. I'm sure I'm going to talk about changes, feelings, emotions… And surely some of these new jobs will have an ironic and funny vision that I've achieved in recent years.

How about you arranged in front of the cameras?

I've participated in two films in the movies: The dragons hunter and Sabin. They were very small papers. I have done some work on television, the most important in the Goazen and Goenkale series, and I felt very comfortable. I enjoyed the series much more, because the roles have been longer.

You also introduced yourself to the TV show Operation Triunfo.

Yes, to the second edition. I saw the first edition and I was sent to singing schools. I wanted to be in one of those academies with the best interpreting, dancing and voice teachers. I also wanted to show that I was a singer. I got to the final stage. I found it very hard how they treated us like a television product and I left it. A program manager told me that the train only happens once in life, but I saw it clearly. This train may pass once, but there are more trains to get to the same place, to be successful. The road may be longer and harder, but you will control it and not the others. Besides, what is success? For me, success is being able to live by doing what you like. But now it seems that, thanks to these programs, it is successful to show up on television. I don't mean that television doesn't help to be known and open the doors, but there's a risk of becoming a product, because it doesn't need an artist. I'm often asked if I regretted the decision I made, and I say no, especially because I wasn't very clear about what I wanted to do as a singer at the time, and it would be very easy for me to become a product. O.T. There are many members who have had a very bad time after that program. It takes years to get people recognized, it's not a matter of appearing on a television show, and it's over. It's not so superficial and easy.

Do you spread the fake image of artists?

Television is always looking for a product and is often much more important than personal life, career or vocational training. You don't need an artist, or someone with a personality, to make their versions or compositions, to put their soul in. They ask them to have a voice of Christ, to be able to sing in different styles, to be able to dance… even if they are not their style. Today we hear voices from Christ, but it is so important to have a soul, to give something to songs, as to sing well. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find something original.

Those of the '80s I like a lot because everyone sings and dances as they want. Today the dress, everything… is similar. And what to say about children's television shows. I don't like anything. They mimic adults very artificially. The 5-year-old says: “Being here is a lifelong dream.” How the dream of always, you're only 5 years old! The world of artists is becoming very artificial. It is true that some of those who have left this type of session continue. They're the ones who really value and work hard.

Is it economically difficult to be a professional singer?

We have been through the crisis for years, but we cannot complain about how things are. Many companies and groups have had to take some other way of life in order to be able to live, and we, for the time being, are still in this. The crisis and VAT have done a great deal of damage. It has lowered VAT, but only when it comes to buying tickets, for us it remains the same because the caching we charge continues with the same VAT. You have to be very clear that that's what you want, and yet, many times you think it's best to prepare competitions and send them all to the pitch. On the other hand, it gives you a lot of joy, what you live on stage doesn't give you anything else.

Why are there so many good singers in Euskal Herria?

Because there's always been a lot of habit of singing. More in the North, at least today. In addition, they're very fine singing. They have very special harmonies and very sweet melodies.

Are the joy and the voice tied?

When we're sad, beautiful songs also emerge, but it's true that when we're happy, our bodies are more open and our voices are freer. The voice is directly connected to emotions and the whole body. That's why attitudes are very important. The body should be more relaxed and flexible when singing than signing. In our case, especially body care is very important to do an hour and a half function and get out alive. We sang the whole show to capella, dancing and performing sketches without stopping for a second.

How do you care for your voice?

Before singing you have to warm up well and prepare the most difficult sections. You have to do physical exercise and take care of your diet. Before chanting it is advisable to eat little, as the body places most of its forces in digestion. I didn't even see the ice. No tobacco. Emotions also have a huge influence. When you're sick or with little energy, the technique will conceal all of this and help you do less damage to your throat.

Do you have a commitment to Basque music and Basque music?

I am Euskaldun, Euskaldun berri and it was clear that I needed fellow Euskaldunes, to know the Basque Country and the Basque culture. For example, what we've done at EPA! It's been a lot of fun. We have put our stones in familiar Basque songs. Once in Loyola, for example, we've turned them into a music album. We are always ready to participate in events for Euskera and culture, such as galas, presentations or any kind of prize.

What is the key to your success?

We try to be elegant and with humor, and in our versions we seek the originality of interpretation. At work we are very serious so that then on stage everything is fun. We have fun on the stage and the public is also infected. It is very important to adapt to the function, to the place, to the situation. It is not the same to sing at the gala of the San Sebastian Film Festival, in Ahotsenea as in Nafarroa Oinez.
