Man or woman? Doctor
- Cape Town, South Africa 1826. While James Barry, a British Army surgeon, was assisting in a childbirth, he realized that there was no choice but to take the child out of surgery. Caesarea had never been performed and had only read three cases of success (cases in which the mother and child survived) before. And Barry managed to live both of them. So he successfully did the first Cesarean section of Africa and the entire British Empire.
In addition, it promoted more stringent hygiene conditions, improved patient diet and expanded plant-based syphilis and gonococcal treatments. He worked in many parts of the world and was appointed Inspector General, thus achieving the second largest medical post in the British Army.
An Irish doctor is in danger, responsible in his work and agile, of difficult treatment. Almost always with the sword, he fought two or three times in mourning with the army officers, and with Florence Nightingale, the precursor of nursing, he did as well. “He behaved like a savage,” Nightingal wrote about him, “it’s the hardest being I’ve ever encountered in the army.” And yet, he was lenient and caring for the sick. After the successful Cape Town Cesarean, Wilhelmina Munnik spent the following day with her mother, who was given the name of James Barry Munnik, grateful.
He died in 1865 and the scandal was born. The maid who was responsible for cleaning the corpse said that the deceased was "a full woman" (and that, according to the furrows she saw in the cortex, she had also given birth). Recently, Doctor Michael du Preez and writer Jeremy Dronfield were in charge of investigating the details of James Barry's early years.
Margaret Ann Bulkley, who was called when she was born, was born in Ireland in the 1790s; Preez and Dronfield say that Cork was born and others believe it was born at the other end of the island, in Belfast.
