Bones and lies in the water of the past
You might think it's not possible to make a hole in the water, but it was Iñigo Aranbarri who got it with this book, and he got it very well. The beginning surprises the reader with an event that can be related to the decline of the big narratives: a Nazi captain commits suicide in a hotel in Buenos Aires. From there, several narratives are spread that are located in different time spaces.
The main thread is at the time when villages (including cemeteries) began emptying to fill the Itoiz reservoir in 2003. However, before water covers history, we see a trio that is in its last effort to bring the past to light. The exhumation of the cemetery is carried out by the forensic anthropologist Maite, who will involve the journalist Imanol and the Argentine collaborator Oscar in the task of exhumation. The woman has centripetal force, but the narrative function is given only to two men. Thus, Imanol constructs a historical-literary journey through the history of the Oscars’ grandfather and the way of dying of the Red Navarre Juana: The Hitlerian sailors and the woman killed in Navarre in the 1940s. However, in an interview to recall memories, it seems that Imanol's journalistic instinct fades, and his candid attitude can damage credibility. Oscar, for his part, brings with him the Argentine dictatorship in a report of the pains of persecution and inventions of memory.
Imanol and Oscar bear the weight of the past. They're losers, rebuilding the stories of losers. The problems that arise in trying to rewrite history show how complex a task it is. To this end, Oscar questions what the past has to do with truth.
Memories and reflections are making their way in the novel, how water. As these reflections of the characters become known, their perverse aspects will appear, as well as other social, historical and family problems. But that bittersweet is balanced by the sweetness of Aranbarri's prose. Not only because of the excellent use of Euskera, but also because of the artistic references that are given throughout the narrative and the semantic relationships between memories.
In this dark context, with the intention of hiding the truth, someone steals Imanol his Mont Blanca as an invitation to stop writing. However, if the journalist, historian or literary creator has guns, that's a pen. If not, ask Iñaki Abaitua, who has finished in eleven steps.
