The most audible noise ever recorded
- On 27 August 1888, the Krakato volcano exploded in the Dutch East Indies in present-day Indonesia. The explosion was heard over 5,000 kilometres away, in the thirteenth part of the planet or, in the same way, in 7.7 per cent of the earth ' s surface.
The impact of the hum affected air pressure and was recorded by a barometer from a gas factory in Batavia (now Jakarta). Mercury was 6.5 centimeters, which means that the noise was 172 decibels. A pneumatic hammer emits a 100 decibels sound and a 150 reaction engine if the sound at source is measured. But the gas factory was about 160 kilometers from Krakato.
