The musician Josu Zabala and the bertsolaris Unai Iturriaga and Igor Elortza had already seen them together on stage, at the time of groups 7 Eskale and Gu ta Gutarrak. In the project they have launched this summer, they have held two exchanges: Rafa Rueda and a mysterious cardboard box. With the pretext of bringing this box of villages through the villages, the public of Baiona, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Ondarroa, Estella and Bilbao have been able to enjoy the show Loads & Downloads. The last stop was the Aste Nagusia of the Biscayan capital. On the tour of Kalez Street, the attendees were of all ages.
There was no lack of improvisation between the two bertsolaris. The staging often took an improvised form, but it is nothing more than a mere appearance, it is well thought out and worked Loads & Downloads. Otherwise, it would not have been possible for almost three hours for people to follow him carefully. The four protagonists knew how to perfectly squeeze everything they had learned in their long career and knew how to connect with the public.
The first stop was held by the quartet in the plaza of the Cathedral of Santiago. There they placed in the center the fifth protagonist, the cardboard box, full of mysterious gifts collected in the program of Estella. To warm up the atmosphere, Elortza and Iturriaga started singing at the rhythm of Sweet home Alabama, and they showed that such American music is suitable for the copel. They often dealt with a wide range of subjects: Celebration of Aste Nagusia, Marijaia, the entrance of the Ertzainas in the comparsa Hontzak, the jokes... The Loads & Downloads also took a space to explain what had been for them, knowing that Bilbao was the last session. “Loads and Downloads, in case of dying somewhere; dying in Aste Nagusia, we wanted in Bilbao,” Elorza rounded.
Josu Zabala and Rafa Rueda were not alone in bringing music to the bertsos. The mungiarra played a song created for this show and Josu Zabala left us one of the most memorable moments of the night: He jumped and danced in distress under the Arenal Bridge, as if we went back to the Hertzainak concerts. Gradually, the show began to acquire a nostalgic tone, but without losing sight of the present day. In that makeshift scene in the form of a bunker, Iturriaga saw “the refuge of the Basques of Bilbao”.
In the txosna de la comparsa Algara the quotes of that night, between old melodies and new verses, had their chance. Soon after, the fireworks illuminated the sky of Bilbao. Elorza requested permission to put “autonomous” and the public welcomed the proposal. New coplas were stitched with the phrases of the most well-known songs of the Basque songwriter, it was a beautiful and surprising composition.
The autonomy exercise culminated in the updated version of the song Gora Gu ta Gutarrak, with the participation of the Xanpe battery. They also opened at once the box they brought from Estella: The wine, the book and the scarf of Estella’s festivities also gave the opportunity to touch the horn. The Loads & Downloads have ended, but at least Elortza considered its intention fulfilled: “We had no other purpose than to have a good time, and we’ve done it.”
