Itxaro Borda was the main protagonist of the film in early June at the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao. On the 8th, the Euskaltegis of Bilbao La Vieja performed an uninterrupted reading of the 100% Basque novel. The 1615 performances of the Hinka group looked to the past, to the times of the Basques who went to Iceland to hunt whales.
At any rate, the starting point for action is the present: Itxaro Borda herself was in Iceland and her experiences pushed her to write. The lonely and wild landscapes of the island, the giant whales captured by the Basques in their waters, the old Icelandic vocabulary and with words in Basque... and the massacre of 1615. In the fall of that year, 32 Basques died.
At the request of the Hinka group, Itxaro Borda wrote 13 poetic texts. The working trio was created in 1615 with the music of guitars, trikitilaris and voices. The performance of Bilbao began by thanking for the death of the whale of Ziburu, Joannes d’Etcheberri. Then, guided by the suggestive words of Borda and the joyful melodies of the trio, the audience plunged into the cold waters of Iceland, along with those whalers from four centuries ago. They were awaited by the wise Jon Gudmunsson, who wrote about the scrolls of the Basques in the 17th century.
The sound of the trikitixa invited listeners to join those epic adventure trips. Like the Basques of yesteryear, to go further than anyone, to be braver than anyone else. Next winter, however, creates uncertainty at the gates of the Arctic Sea. I don't know if I'll come back. Some never returned, because they had found the same fate as the whale: “The sea is red with whale blood, sea blood, live blood,” says Spanjavivergin.
Then, in the song Lilja maitez, Hinka used the 14th-century adapted Icelandic melody. In a magical moment they recited some stanzas in Icelandic, in the children's song El zorro de Artica. In the rolling waves of the sea, the past and the present came together in this small room in Bilbao, almost perceiving the wind of Iceland and the ocean saltpeter. The Atlantic connected the two peoples a long time ago, as well as languages: they created the Euskera-Icelandic pidgin to understand each other and some lists of words. Itxaro Borda remembers in the song Esku-izkribuak that had one of them in her hands, “by playing the papers, she touched me.”
It's an interesting exercise to bring together literature and music, past and present. Itxaro Borda has been able to find the echo of the memory of the Basques in Reykjavik today and Hinka has dressed the melody with delight.
Things aren’t easy in fact, and it will be for one reason or another, but lately I’ve bitten my tongue more than I should for these two things: the culture of the sold out and the FOMO – the latter perhaps has to be explained, because it’s not said so many times: the... [+]
