The American progressisee, a fighting feminist, Adrienne Rich followed the man in her university career, brought three children she cared for, dissolved marriage, her former suicidal husband, wrote in 1976 Twenty-One Love Poems (Twenty-one Poems of Love). With this silenced woman and Twenty-One Love Poems, officially lesbian, half Jewish, her life has been the pursuit of being, before the theorists who wrote about identity invented that word. Its style is therefore purely political and beautiful in its vital form: “If you’ve taken this shell as my past/ and you’ve sent it to look for a bit of sale/ you’ve learned that long ago I went deep/ to the spinal cord.”
Adrienne Rich knew how to neglect when necessary, with cadence if he asked for poems, always suggestive. Sometimes it will lead you to a state of shock, sometimes it will excite you: “I dreamed I was calling you on the phone/ to tell you: Take more of yourself.”
In these poems of desire and impotence of the 20th century, you will certainly find authentic poetry. He has said that lyrical cannot have a curative touch, emotional massage, the aromatherapy of language. And it seems curious, but he also said that poetry cannot fall into political ease, becoming a project, a manual or a poster. An example of this balance is this beautiful book that you read in the blink of your eyes and that lasts a long time on the roof of your mouth.
It is the nineteenth volume of the Munduko Poesia Kaierak collection. Maialen Berasategi has become very animated, soft and firm, round with her edges, Adrienne Rich: “There’s a cop who’s a walker and father at the same time:/ lived in your home block, grew up with your siblings,/ had some ideals./ You almost don't know it with the boots and the silver plate, or with the pistol kicking on horseback."
The poet knew, therefore, what it was like to write perfect poetry, as you had to rhyme, to modulate a kind of music to create language. He excited W. H. His imagination and, just launched in the 1950s, published his first poem, A Change of World, in the legendary Yale Younger Poets Series. That's why Adrienne Rich, so well known as the academy and the canon, so well known as the perfect white North America and the adulation of machismo, invented a whole new weapon turning those same weapons around: a beautiful emancipating precision.
