In the "fantasy of utopia"?
In 1979, Mikel Zarate wrote the book Utopiaren fantasian. In it is the phrase Sense of the children, “ridiculous comedy and (sic.) It presents it as "regrettable." Using a masterful irony, it presents some inappropriate behaviors of the Basques. For example, let adults tell children to speak in Basque and, at the same time, to speak in Spanish among them.
The Posiktibity campaign of the 21st century reflects the same situation as this short story written in the 20th century. Although almost forty years have elapsed, the most evident difference between the anecdotes of the time and the present lies in the support –book versus video–, not in the content or meanings. The assessment of this similarity reminds us of the competition between optimist and pessimist: “Haven’t we gone back or haven’t advanced anything?” Surely neither of them.
Over decades, intensive work has been done. We have managed, first of all, to break the decline of the Basque country and, to some extent, to reverse the trend. That's terrible, in fact. In this linguistic struggle, we've begun to pull the head out of the trench, but we still have the body in the hole.
Continuing with the achievements, cultural activity – social and institutional – has acquired socio-linguistic knowledge and experience. Despite the fact that there are still many limitations and disabilities, the Basque Country is very close to conquering society, taking it out of the trench. Conquer society, yes, because that is the utopia of Euskera forty years ago and today.
We are taking further steps. For example, we have found a way to disseminate the use of the Basque Country through the proliferation of initiatives such as Egia. Tarra-tarra, let's take the Basque from the trench.
Once we know that these initiatives are valuable, we fall short as isolated initiatives from each place. Now, the key is to increase the use of Euskera in society in general, not only in the areas of dependency directly influenced by the Basque Country, but also in the fact that citizens living in places far from the Basque country realize the reality and value of that language. In order to achieve this, in addition to a strong impetus for all Basque cultural activity, the cooperation of many other social partners will be necessary.
On this road lies the intention that Topagunea and the Basque Government, together with both, have just presented: “Euskarak 365 egun: a new proposal to work on linguistic habits and social activation in the Basque Country and in common”. This initiative, given its giant dimension, will not see the light until 2018. If social and Basque cultural actors were to join this project, the Basque Country would leave the trench and begin to conquer society. That is, do not stay in the “fantasy of utopia” and start to make the dream come true.
