Family
It is not the only piano duo that has been created as a family in Russia: Emil Guilels and her daughter Elena, or Dimitri Baxkirov and Elena Baxkirova are good examples of how talent is passed on through genes (and it seems that more is happening in Russia). In this case, the prestigious pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy has visited the Kursaal Auditorium with his son Vovka and the result was simply effective.
They're good pianists, no doubt. Vladimir, almost eighty years old (he will do them in July), maintains his qualities: good sound, precision, safe technique… And Vovka has a special delicacy and a measured and round pulsation. They gave a recital, but without magic. It was difficult to balance the volumes between them. In general, the blueprint remained as far as the dynamics of interpretation are concerned and, in short, we heard excellent execution but, unfortunately, pale.
The Hungarian Divertiment by Franz Schubert, op. 54 D. 818 is not the most brilliant work of the composer, but it was a good job to get the two soloists into the Giro d'Italia. We hear it with a funny tinkle. Then the well-known Moldava River, belonging to the series of symphonic poems My homeland of Smetana, did not have enough gloss. The two musicians got together well, they achieved good sound effects, but, as has been said before, the dynamic was a plane, and the interpretation lacked some courage.
In the second part, we noticed more nuances. We hear the Spanish Rapsodia by Maurice Ravel, for two pianos, funny, rhythmic, more naturalness than in previous works. And they certainly did the best of them with Rachmaninov. 1 of this composer. Suite, op. 5. The work of two Fantaisie-tableaux pianos showed more flexibility and freshness. Although the title of the recital was that of the Ashkenazy and Russian music, this was the only Russian play they played, and in this one we felt the talent of this family.
As a bis, they played a piece of Glinka made for orchestra and adapted for piano by Glazunov. This did go very well.
