First thing sold by eBay
- In 1995, Pierre Omidyar launched an auction product sales website in Silicon Valley (USA). The site, which was then called TrailersWeb, is now eBay, one of the 50 most valuable brands in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
To test the auction site, he put on sale a laser pointer (in the photo). Two weeks after his purchase, the pointer broke down, and in the announcement he said he was not changing the batteries. Omidyar purchased the new product for $30, while the starting price was set at a dollar. During the first week there were no offers. The movement began in the second week, and eventually sold the useless demonstrator worth $14, $83.
