The students' gaze rising from the book to the garden
“We live in a society that has turned its back on the rural world. Most of them live in an urbanized area, far from the countryside and from agriculture.” These are the first words of the statement by the initiators of the Nekazkultura Eskoletara project, which took place on 11 May in Zizurkil. The Rural Development Associations of Gipuzkoa (Landaola), Ingurugela of the Basque Government and the Cristina Enea Foundation of Donostia-San Sebastián have promoted the project in collaboration, understanding that the educational centers play an important role in the reflection on the problems of the rural environment.
Agricultural culture to schools, how?
Reflection
on agriculture and food and rural orientation are some of the objectives of the project. For this purpose, during the 2016-2017 course, two activities have been carried out around seeds with young people from schools: In the Search for Hidden Seeds initiative, students had to find seeds that were in their environment (family, neighbors, neighbors, etc.). ), and collect information about them, using the help of the people who sow them. activity called Seed Shelter, it is intended to create small seed banks in schools with orchard. They keep the seeds obtained from their orchards and the gardeners of the area to enrich the collection of seeds from the center year after year. Looking to the future, it is intended to create a seed network among the educational institutions involved in the initiative.
