What are we at the moment?
In the last hundred years, a large number of Vasco-speakers and Basques have striven for the independence of the Basque Country or of Navarre or of the Basque Country; many have given life, have lost their lives and have taken it from others. This whole story is very important – unprecedented there are no descendants – but, in two words, what are we in today?
The last Aberri Eguna have not been terrible. And what have the craftsmen of peace done? That's been terrible, we've been taught the pattern to the Westerners. what risks they have acquired and how well they have achieved the objective set! Yes, but releasing the prisoners is more difficult, because the states have the keys and want to use them for revenge, especially those of Spain.
Has the success of the Korrika also not been satisfactory in order to achieve an Euskal Herria euskaldun? The final in Pamplona! Yesterday it seemed impossible to us! Yes. But it also does so from folklorism, and we are far from achieving official status in the seven territories and normalizing the Basque Country.
In the early 21st century, just ten years later, Catalans were looking at us to learn from us. Carod Rovira from ERC said that from Catalonia the gaze towards the Basque Country was constant. Now let's go the other way. It has become an axiom to say that the people have made stately politicians there independent, and that here too it is going to happen. That's where it's in our hands. The wave is important and in order to carry it out we need courageous abertzales from different areas. Whatever happens there from the fall will have a lot of influence on our environment; for good!
From politics to cultural identity, the historical militant of ERC Heribert Barrera said that Euskal Herria had easier to maintain identity, but this was said because he considered Catalan essential in Catalan identity and not in Basque identity, seeing what happens here. That is where I see the greatest danger: that of total culturally assimilation. Mostly fueled by Spanish media and cultural expressions in Spanish, how to achieve cultural sovereignty?
Telesforo Monzón told Patxi Zabaleta that for the peoples to remain as a people, in addition to what is necessary to satisfy the economic and social needs of daily life, a struggle for ideas and culture is necessary, because the people have an identity that lasts in time before and after the existence of the individuals.
Political and cultural independence is essential and in the latter language is essential. First, do we need politicians? They have said so in Catalonia. And even if they succeed – difficult but feasible – what will cost them the most is the generalisation of the Catalan language and culture! And to us too.
