After eating I put the Know and Win contest on the TV. It's fit for sleep, but it also has something addictive. Throughout the year, a player who exceeds 7,000 points receives the status of Gorgeous. These wonderful people meet in special sessions and have the opportunity to re-show their extraordinary knowledge. This year, in these special programs, all participants were men.
That image worried me. If we make an in-depth reflection, we will identify in this programme eleven mechanisms that reject women. Men are always the majority of participants. Perhaps for the environment: the presenter, the man; the low off voice reading the questions, is very masculine. Pilar Álvarez is the second presenter, only asks two questions per program and when Jordi Hurtado is ill he does not act as a representative, but seeks another man. The questions are usually androcentric, they mainly refer to male contributions. Also, given that you don't get too much money (imagine you may be playing two months to get those 7,000 euros), the main motivation to sign up is the desire to demonstrate genius and the desire to compete with other geniuses, which has a lot to do with empowerment. You must be very educated and fast, as the competition requires diverse knowledge, dexterity in the rapid calculation or mastery of the vocabulary in Spanish.
In the list of winners of the Euskadi Literature Awards each year, the most common proportion is four men and two or three women. Maybe because men publish more works? Perhaps because they have more time and resources for creation? Or will the courts tend to value men's works more?
This year I participated in the jury of the Azkue Foundation blog competition. As we joined the votes of the citizens and those of the jury, we realized that in that classification men were more visible. The meritocratic argument “the best have to win” normalizes that trend and that’s why I started looking for other reasons. Can there be an obstacle to the criteria? The best will be the one who has the most technical knowledge, has paid for the services of a designer, or has more followers in social networks, among others. Is it possible for men to have more facilities? I also reflected on the fact that traditionally male-related areas (technology, video games, sport) have more prestige than the hobbies and interests that feed on women, especially, I am referring to fashion. The members of the Blogetan jury share this concern and the organization is committed to taking into account our thoughts.
I've been finalist in the Focus Awards journalism competition. The lists of journalists are distinguished by gender: we chose the best male journalist on the one hand and the best female journalist on the other. In film, roles are divided according to gender, but in journalism, the genre of the authors should not be important. Surely, this solution is designed to ensure the visibility of women, but it is a mirage of equality.
On the other hand, in the Euskadi Literature Awards, the most common proportion in the winners list is four men and two or three women. Maybe because men publish more works? Perhaps because they have more time and resources for creation? Or will the courts tend to value men's works more?
The lack of parity in competitions can serve to identify the lack of substantive equality. It's a complex challenge, but it's really urgent. Otherwise, we will continue to believe unconsciously that men are faster, more trained, more geniuses.

I don't want my daughter disguising herself as a Gypsy in the caldereros. I don’t want Gypsy children at my daughter’s school to dress up as Gypsies in caldereros. Because being a gypsy is not a disguise. Because being a gypsy is not a party that takes place once a year, with... [+]

This weekend I've been thinking about the word 'aesthetic' in relation to a phrase said by a friend: “This work is aesthetic.” I have studied the etymology of the word aesthetic, it seems that its meaning was originally perceived through the senses, and it was later associated... [+]
