The year 2017 is decisive for the future of the Union Europea.Deberto save at least three match point of choice: Dutch, French, Germans and maybe Italians too. The first one has passed and is pleased with the result. In the end, Geert Wilders and his Freedom Party have not won the elections. However, it cannot be denied that it has been greatly promoted, it has become the second force and has won five more seats than in the previous legislature. In total, the populist right will have twenty-five seats, seven more than in the previous legislature.

Under the populist right-wing category are included very different parties. Ethnic nationalism is a shared element by all, and they therefore bet on restrictive immigration policies and are Islamophobes to one degree or another. From there, there are different ideological sensitivities. For example, the French National Front has radical Social Democrat proposals in the socio-economic field, while Wilders, on the other hand, mainly drives a neo-liberal agenda. Another important difference is the nature of each party. The National Front is working on a strategy to win the presidential elections, so, despite highlighting some aspects of its programme, it is generally based on a comprehensive proposal. The Freedom Party, however, could be described as a party to a subject, that is, most aspects of its agenda are inconsistent, the most important thing is Islamophobia.

The Dutch electoral system is one of the most proportional in the world, 150 Members are appointed in a single constituency. If a nomination reaches 0.67% of the votes, it is left with a seat, so any extreme proposal can easily enter Parliament and condition the political debate. On the other hand, populists have a very difficult time getting into government and almost impossible for them to only get power. That can happen in presidential systems, as the winner only gets one place at stake, so Trump has been able to win in the United States or the Populist Left in Latin America. On the other hand, in the proportional parliamentary systems, the vote is dispersed among the various political sensitivities. Coalitions are needed to form governments. Wilders knows that well, so rather than getting a government, what he wants is to condition the political agenda and infect the other parties with his own ideas. It creates confusion with provocative political manifestations, but it cannot be denied that it has achieved good results from your point of view. Yes, the former Wilders party, the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, has once again won the elections, but at what price?

Two weeks before the elections, the European Commission has already warned that one million undocumented immigrants should be expelled from the EU. If that were not enough, in the last week of the campaign, the Dutch Government has endorsed Wilders' positions on Turkey. It has banned the rallies of the members of the Erdogan Government and has not given the Turkish Foreign Minister permission to land in the Netherlands, exploring the borders of international law and opening a confrontation with a NATO ally. Thus, the Prime Minister and the Christian Democrats who have had a tougher attitude in the coalition government have received their prize in the election results. Meanwhile, the Left has been weaker than ever with 37 Members (14 Socialists – United Left, 14 Green Left and 9 Labour). Are you sure the populist right is losing?
