Is this our welfare model?
- In the Basque Country there is poverty and there is also child poverty, despite the fact that we are in the Basque oasis and we think that with Income Guarantee Income and the like we have a good public system of social protection.
That is, 9% of the children are in poverty, in the CAV it would be 24,000 children and in Navarre 7,000. These data have been provided by the Save The Children organisation in a report on child imbalances, equality opportunities and public policies, drawn up by the European Commission. The report says nothing about Ipar Euskal Herria, although we know that the situation is the same.
The most impoverished and needy children are those of families with fewer employment opportunities, usually single-parent and foreign. According to the report, “neither public social protection policies nor the tax system are designed to reduce the imbalance and end poverty.”
At the same time as this information was made available, we learned that there is no real interest on the part of governments and foreign ministers – loyal to employers, as always – in taking steps towards a fair tax reform: they do not intend to tax corporation tax. The largest contribution to public coffers is made by labour incomes, and capital incomes only make up one tenth of them. Thus, EUR 900 million is collected less per year than the European average. In this way it is impossible to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality.
Is that the model of well-being that we want in the Basque Country? What interests are our politicians and governments defending? At least for their shares, those of the employers and those of high income.
