Capitalism and Vatican diplomacy
- The elite of global capitalism have gathered these days in Davos to discuss how they can benefit from them to maintain policies that generate exclusion. In the meantime, the Pope has had a long conversation with El País, where he has highlighted the diplomacy of the Holy See.
The Pope is “concerned” that “a small group has 80% of the world’s fortune”, but his diplomatic words have not gone further. They ask him whether governments are reacting with restraint to the serious problem of migration, and the Pope replies: “Everyone does what they can or want. It is difficult to give an opinion on this. But it is clear that the fact that the Mediterranean has become a graveyard should give us what to think.”
Thousands of people die in the Mediterranean. Is there no responsibility among those who promote wars in countries that export migrants? Why does the Pope conceal those responsible? Why does it not specify more, such as when it condemns “terrorism” for example?
In the interview he does not even mention the word “capitalism”. For a moment, when he talks about South America, he says he is suffering the “tie of economic liberalism.” “I have condemned him in the Evangelii Gaudium [Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis in 2013], because that economy kills, kills hunger, culture…” He says that at the heart of that economic system there is “monetary God” and that “great policies of exclusion” are made at his expense. But if you see it that way, why doesn't it condemn the governments of the world that manage that capitalism and its perpetrators? In 2016, the Mediterranean tragedy killed over 5,000 people in the Mediterranean. There are so many Vatican diplomacy, a lack of prophetic authenticity.
