Europe betrays refugees
- The low temperatures and snow that Europe has covered have once again highlighted the problem of refugees seeking a new world fleeing war and hunger in their countries.
All this leads us to denounce the failure of the European Union’s policies. The EU has failed to honour the commitments made in September 2015. It was agreed to relocate 160,000 refugees blocked in Italy and Greece in other EU countries. Defeat has been total. For example, the Spanish State had to host 17,737 refugees, but it has not yet received more than 898. And the responsibility is not just that of the PP government: What do the other opposition parties do and what do we, the citizens, do?
In the face of such a failure and error, some movements and groups in the Basque Country have been examples of citizen solidarity, with the aim of implementing concrete solutions. Mikel Zuluaga and Bego Huarte have put their lives at risk when they have tried to leave Greece hidden in their van eight refugees, for whom they had found work and accommodation in the Basque Country. Those who created misery, nurtured wars and enforced their law were arrested, but charged with “promoting illegal immigration and risking the security of refugees.”
It is cynicism and insolence! Betrayal of politicians, diplomats and EU states! And what an example the people have given, represented by Mikel and Bego. Despite being arrested, they have claimed that they are consistent with civil disobedience and that they will do so again, saying that these kinds of actions "make us human". It is that humanity and that responsibility that is lacking for the haste, for the politicians and for the governments, and in part for us, for not preventing this kind of situation.
