In the study on the attitude that the Basque Immigration Observatory performs each year on the immigrant population, the Barometer highlights the following ideas: people with lower incomes show a more negative attitude towards the immigrant population. On the contrary, those in the best economic situation express the most open views.
No wonder. The arrival of immigrants does not harm the employability of those in good condition, and in addition, economic resources allow immigrants to benefit from their needs, such as domestic work or personal care. In other words, many advantages and very few damage. Conversely, those at the other end of the social structure find the opposite: immigrants are competitors in accessing more precarious jobs or applying for certain social benefits.
This element is very important to understand the rise of the far-right and the xenophobic and racist attitudes they have raised, both in Europe and in the United States.
More and more people are left out of globalisation and new trends in the labour market, those who are only left in the labour market and who, throughout their lives, will have little chance of getting out of this situation. The name of this group is the precarious. From a stable and secure context, we have moved to a reality in which vulnerability and temporality predominate.
Both leftist parties and classical socialdemocracy do not meet their needs, but take the place of progressive middle classes. In this void that has been created, the far-right has sought its space using precisely the words that want to hear this precarious: you are the priority, we will close borders so that the “others” do not come and do not introduce products from the “others”. Anyway, you need someone to serve you, not the sermon you're looking at from above. “You are a racist.”
I don't sincerely believe that most of Donald Trump's voters in the United States or Marine Le Pen in France are racist, at best they can show a positional, but not ideological, xenophobia. That should be clear to us when we look at that sector of society with contempt, because we are strengthening their views rather than questioning them, and because we are offering more opportunities to Trump and others. The party is on another stage and if we do not see it, the rise of the far-right will be constant.
Let us not forget that the far-right offers people in vulnerable situations what they want to hear: “Hope.” No more and no less.
