No deficit for military spending
- A curious and clarifying piece of news has gone unnoticed, demonstrating the criteria followed by those who run the European Union: Brussels has proposed the creation of a large joint fund for military spending, which could be extended until 2012.
The EU intends to mobilise more than EUR 5 billion from 2017. With this billionaire fund, it wants to promote strategic investments such as drones for European defence. To achieve this, it does not matter whether it affects the public deficit, which in other areas is taboo. The Community Executive has offered not to increase the deficit that States spend on military defence, that is, to exceed the deficit limit set by Brussels if the diversion is subject to military plans. Heads of State will meet on 15 and 16 December to decide what to do with European leaders.
The public deficit is only sacred when we talk about salaries, pensions, equality, economic and political migrants, dependency, health, education or climate change. It's the main argument for making social cutbacks. From a militaristic perspective, the EU has shown its support for multinationals and capital, in this case represented by the arms industry. They have assured that "to justify" the measure, military investments would generate 1.4 million high-skilled jobs in the country. But we have not been told how much profit the military industry will have. The least is that these weapons should be used to kill people, to destroy villages, or for millions of migrants to leave to Europe’s black destiny. To this end, it does not matter whether the European states exceed the public deficit. And then social rights will be curtailed, in defense of a sacred public deficit.
