In Calais, thousands of people remained in unbearable conditions, cold, humidity, only ten mobile toilets and a few sources to meet basic hygiene needs. This place was called Jungla, “a space without laws, without protection and without minimal recognition of human rights.” It gives the impression that France is ashamed of this situation and I am trying to wash its face, rather than solving the problem.

The jungle, which is at the heart of Europe, has not been created by political and economic migrants. It has created a "smart" and "democratic" Europe, ignoring the right to protection and implementing policies against immigrants. It has erected walls, promoted social exclusion and failed to honour the few and petty commitments made in the face of the humanitarian crisis. This crisis has mobilized tens of thousands of migrants to the European continent, while thousands have died on the way to reach this particular “paradise” or El Dorado.

It is the face of capitalism, because for that it has the best managers sitting in the chairs of the European Parliament and the governments. In order to eliminate this jungle, we should first recognise that it has been created by Europe and that it has responsibility for it; then comply with the commitments made; and address global socio-economic policies to prevent migratory flows at source: invest in those countries, rather than exploit their natural resources.
