The Basque Orchestra has been successful with the first program of the season. What they have achieved is quite difficult. To offer a work of safe success and to include contemporary music with it, with a particularity: I would almost say that the new works were more interesting than the star of the program.
A welcome surprise was the Fanfarria of composer Xabier Sarasa, an absolute premiere. It's written for metals, and in five minutes, it brilliantly explores the possibilities of metals by achieving interesting sonic textures.
And if Sarasa's work opened the concert correctly, the next piece followed the same path. Meditation by Japanese musician Toshio Hosokawa. To the victims of Tsunami was a real gift to the public. It is a very impressionist work, like a symphonic poem, in which the drama of the tsunami, the disaster and the pain are breathed. The treatment of the Orchestra is fine and sensitive, and the composer offers excellent puppet games. In addition, it was clear that Jun Märkl knows the composer’s language in depth to round out his interpretation.
However, there is no doubt that the Main Theatre was full during this period on the one hand, the work of the second part, Carmina burana of Carl Orff, very attractive, and on the other, the Orfeón Donostiarra who participated in this play. It was difficult to locate the orchestra and the choir in the small stage of the Principal, but some lines were removed from the armchair and we had half of the Orpheon in the program. This saved the difficulty. The result was, of course, good, and in part it was the merit of the soloists. Good work by Baritone Peter Schöne, expressive and safe. Vitorian contratenor Carlos Mena performed a wonderful interpretation in the collusive Olim lacus, where he explained the special timbre he has. And the Danish soprano Susanne Elmark erased her passages with her voice and her presence. The address of Märkl was very good at all times. Great.
