At the time of the elections politicians usually make offers to us, but now I want to take the turn to make petitions.
The core of my requests has been indirectly suggested by Julia Sallabank (University of London) through an article (Bat Soziolinguistika Magazine, 98). Based on the experience of international people in the recovery of minority languages, this author states: “Communities are often fragmented because of the discrepancies and opposing ideologies and thoughts surrounding us about how to ‘save’ the language.” We already know that.
The problem is not so much the existence of opinions as of different or contradictory interests, but the failure to manage them properly. Even more serious, not trying to steer the discrepancies.
Without consensus, we will find the ghost of “dividing the community” that Sallabank tells us. In fact, the aggressive tendency of parties to each other is known (and understandable). There is also the dividing and demobilizing effect of party disputes in society.
In the absence of a shared definition of the final objective, the arguments take a demagogic tone. What are the objectives of these proposals? Revitalize the Basque country or win a handful of votes?
In Sallabank’s view, “what is the revitalization of language” is not usually defined in a concrete and consensual manner. In this way, the steps in linguistic policy and planning are extremely complicated. Design and action are completed and, therefore, forces are overthrown. Reintegrating the cited author: “…the objectives are not always visible and the results are not often evaluated”. Of course, if you do not say clearly what it is to revitalise the language, we will not have clear targets or clear deadlines. What is the adequacy of the efforts and the results obtained?
Immersed in this non-consensual definition of Euskera, some criticisms are heard, from time to time, considering it excessive or insufficient. In the same way, politicians offer us a series of measures or contras to convince us that the best option is one's own. In the absence of a shared definition of the final objective, the arguments take a demagogic tone. What are the objectives of these proposals? Revitalize the Basque country or win a handful of votes?
Therefore, my requests to the political parties: “Let them say if they want to revitalize the Basque country.” If positive: “Let each say what he understands about the revitalization of the Basque Country.” And since he does not dare to deny it, he added: “Let them say whether they prefer to favor coexistence or take advantage of the Basque country in search of political benefits.” In the hope that the response will be favourable to “coexistence”, here is the last request: “To make a coordinated effort to revitalize the Basque country.”

And for another year, the unions have organized prefabricated strikes for us. And we, individually, will decide whether or not to join the strike, without the need for any assembly at the school.

Life surrounds everything, it is limited and fragile. To live good lives, it seems to me that the body knows what to do, while the mind, although it knows (when it is well informed), often sees the body deliberately silence. In this silence the mind opens itself to relations... [+]

It is the habit of making decisions that will change our lives with the beginning of the new year. We make lists on three points: one, more sports practice; two, seeing old friends more often; three, going back to Iceland, real and metaphorically. As the months go by, we realize... [+]

Since Benito Lertxundi, who told us that he will leave the scenes for ever, we have been there for several weeks, and since then many of us have felt orphans in one way or another, with a sense of loss or abandonment, sad. To Iruindarro, at least, we will remain forever honored... [+]
There are three knots that complicate our coexistence in the Basques, and for many years, despite our patience and determination, we are unable to break free from these ties. There are at least three knots of the moment: prisoners, Basque, immigrants.
With the new year we are... [+]

Today, the voices of women and children remain within a culture that delegitimizes their voices, silencing their experiences, within a system aimed at minimizing or ignoring their basic rights and needs. A media example of this problem is the case of Juana Rivas, but her story... [+]
