40% of companies in the European Union (EU) do not have the ability to find workers adapted to their profile. There is a “reserve army” made up of 20 million unemployed, but at the same time there are hundreds of companies that, by seeking employees, do not find for them what can serve them. 70 million Europeans lack the ability to read, write and calculate, and 40% of the EU’s population lives without basic digital knowledge, which is a “serious risk of unemployment, poverty and exclusion”.
These are data from a report by the European Commission which is trying to promote vocational training. Unemployment among young people in the Basque Country has increased by 50%. On the other hand, the University launches thousands of unsuccessful people to the labour market every year. Something has been done wrong by public institutions and families. The Professional Schools were abandoned or underestimated, although the one who completed the course found work. And now we're like this. Many companies move outside of our environment to get torneros, adjusters, plumbers, strawberries, caldereros, tuberas, mechanics and electricians.
It would be beneficial for the education and training of our young people to make a clear commitment to the modernisation of vocational training. We are in the age of the digital revolution and on the threshold of a new industrial revolution. Vocational training should take all this into account so that students can prepare properly and have decent jobs here, without having to migrate to any place. Depreciating this path is generating more unemployment, more poverty and more exclusion among young people. And Basque Country, without youth, has no future.
