Goizukoop, cooperative model
In Euskal Herria there has been a commitment to cooperativism for many years. Although there have been some serious errors, such as that of Fagor Household Appliances, which went bankrupt, the Mondragon Group is the largest cooperative model. This is expressed by thousands of workers and companies in different areas. But on a smaller scale, there are hundreds of other cooperatives in the Basque Country.
They are now announcing another cooperative project that could be underway from September onwards: Goizukoop. A gas station will be installed in the Navarre town of Goizueta, which will be cooperative and located in it. Today, residents have to travel at least 50 kilometres to and from Hernani or Leitza on a coiled road for fuel. Citizens have come together to deal with this situation and to provide the community with petrol in a more efficient way. There are 175 citizens who have become co-operative, almost a quarter of those in Goizueta, and they pay a fee of EUR 90. Members will pay 10 cents more than the price purchased per litre of petrol, while unpaid members will pay between 13 and 15 cents more per litre of petrol. It is estimated that partner consumption could reach 81% of that amount, so it will not be difficult for them to comply with what other citizens will consume.
If Goizukoop, who is on the way to flourish, were to go ahead, it would be a good example for other peoples, for neighbours to join together and improve services in different areas. The project to be built with and for the people is a great exercise of auzolan.
