With over 300 channels and over 200 radios, the community media network was very broad and powerful until recently in Canada. The government has cut us off this year from the subsidy of USD 100 million to the private sector for public coffers. It is an incalculable deviation! Private companies are close to decision-makers and more and more sectors are left out of the way. We are experiencing an evolution in all areas: politics is losing power for the benefit of the financiers.

Private media are not enough.

In addition to private means, the public and community sectors must be present. The motivations of these three sectors are quite different: the private sector aims at profit; the public aims to reach the information to all citizens; and the community, to be speakers of the minority, because the public sector fails to fulfil this mission. We have just gathered Community and free media in Montreal in the wake of the World Social Forum (MFS). In Maleruski, Canada we have met less than we thought, denying the visa to many participants. This year the fifth edition of the Durango Azoka has been held.

It was time to make a number of compromises.

On the one hand, we have committed ourselves to promoting these kinds of international gatherings, because we add up faster. The principle of net neutrality is fundamental for all data flows to have the same treatment. Today, most Internet companies are in the hands of a few large corporations. What are the conditions for a democratic numerical sector?
