In addition to a long cement track for aircraft, Noain has a large industrial area. Ten years ago, however, in that cement and veneer area, a green space began to grow that would provide fresh air to the village: Park of the Senses.
The 25,000 square meters of the Park of the Senses are distributed in five areas. Each site is associated with a sense: To taste, to taste, to taste, to smell, to the Mediterranean garden; to the touch, to the French garden; to the view, to the English garden; and to the ear, to the Japanese garden, with its sound of streams and fast waters. In the park there are 30 species of trees, 95 species of bushes and more than 70 species of flowers that, according to the time of the year, produce great changes in the landscape. This green space is, of course, the ideal place for many animals in the forest.
With the support of the gardening staff of the City Hall, Mikel Baztan was the main driver of the idea of the Park of Senses. However, the project would not have been possible if it were not for the attitude adopted by the City Council of Noáin. In the gardens of the park and in all the green spaces of the village, the municipal staff uses ecological gardening techniques, being pioneers in this field. The Lorenea building, located at the entrance to the Park of the Senses, is another example of this City Hall wager: it is built with straw shafts. It includes the Interpretation Centre for Horticulture and Ecological Gardening, which welcomes children and young people from various schools throughout the year.
In recent years, the Parque de los Senses of Noáin has been awarded numerous national and international awards. It is clear, however, that the first winners with the park are the citizens. For Noain the park is a “green lung”.
