The season of this year’s Euskadi Symphony Orchestra has passed. It's been a delightful season, and at the same time, they played with more lucidity in the last session. All the complements generated curiosity: Director Juraj Valčuha, director of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra in Turin, US violinist Jennifer Koh, very acclaimed in her hometown, and her favorite shows.
Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade play, besides having a wonderful timescale, has an inner intellectual touch. It is said that the composer did this work after reading the Banquet of Plato and so, in the five movements of the play are reflected the ideas about the love of five famous Greek characters. It is a masterpiece for violin and orchestra, with an elegant and delicate orchestration. As a soloist, violinist Jennifer Koh went crazy and crazed the audience. She is a lady with an extraordinary talent and certainly with a bio-tuosist style. However, during this trial, I was cold. Of that technical capacity and, of course, of that extraordinary interpretative capacity, I was not too touched.
In the second part of the program, the Basque Orchestra gave us one of the most fascinating symphonies of the 20th century: 5. Sergei Prokofiev Symphony en si bemol mayor op. 100 exactly. It is fruitful work everywhere. Crazy rhythmic, a very bright timple; the work is most enjoyable. Director Valčuha was able to give each movement its own character. The first movement was the heroic and noble Andante; the second, the modern Allegro, who played and ironic; Adagio in the third lyric movement reflected the macabre crescendo; and finally, the final movement of the giocoso Allegro, colorful, rhythmic and full of dissonances so dear to Prokofiev. It is clear that Juraj Valčuha has a deep understanding of the sound world of Prokofiev. This was demonstrated in this great program and we enjoyed it.
