Erandio. In the history of Basque environmentalism, my place of birth has a special place. Pilar Careaga, Mayor of Bilbao appointed by the Franco regime, was going to hear loud cries and protests against the gas emissions of the company Metalquimica. It was gas at that time suffocating time of the 1960s! The main motto was the Bilbao neighborhood. Because it was a town devoured by Bilbao. The National Police murdered Josu Murueta and Antón Fernández with lead bullets in a mobilization against gas, while Velasco was arrested. It was a bloody ecologist baptism.
30 years later, Erandio was elected to implement Zabalgarbi, the Bizkaia incinerator project; in the Sakoni valley, in a contaminated industrial area. The then mayor of the PNV agreed that jobs were needed, since it was a municipality with the highest rate of unemployed in the Basque Country. On the contrary, in the memory of the erandiotars the gas years were still alive and gave a resounding no to Zabalgarbi. Finally, a group of international experts convened by the Diputación de Bizkaia chose a more appropriate place for the occasion: Next to the Artigas landfill in Bilbao, in the upper part of the municipality of Alonsotegi. That's where he's just turned 10, with a lot of toxic stories.
Zubieta: It's not a toxic place -- at least still. Quite the opposite. A person whom I want a lot has just come to live there and I think he has chosen one of the most beautiful places in Gipuzkoa. This neighborhood between the urban centers of Lasarte-Oria and Usurbil, at the moment is nothing more than a green area of stroll and enjoyment, in the valley of the river Oria. But he knows that a dangerous hole is made in the skirts of Mount Andatza. And there, half-hidden, they want to install the Gipuzkoa incinerator.
Who and how have you decided that Zubieta is the right place to be a toxic focus? Ask Odón Elorza. Being mayor of San Sebastian, for the Zergarbi project of Gipuzkoa (the one in Bizkaia is Zabalgarbi, not curious?) A site had to be found and, after passing through many villages in Gipuzkoa, they decided to settle on the grounds at the end of San Sebastian. As in the case of Bizkaia, climbing the mountain, in areas. But there they will have to go daily a lot of trucks, which are now moving to Meruelo (Cantabria), to reach the Vizcaine capital. Why don't they go to the Bilbao incinerator? More expensive? Iosu Madariaga must be consulted. Last month he signed the Favorable Environmental Impact Report as the head of the Basque Government. A few years ago, when he was responsible for Zabalgarbi in El Correo, he said that an incinerator in the Basque Autonomous Community was sufficient.
Why now, another one in Zubieta?

Already a month before the arrival of winter, the last days of the longest night,... [+]
Today, the voices of women and children remain within a culture that delegitimizes their voices, silencing their experiences, within a system aimed at minimizing or ignoring their basic rights and needs. A media example of this problem is the case of Juana Rivas, but her story... [+]

The New Year’s Morning is the title of a roundness created by Joxe Ansorena, brother of our grandfather Isidro, for the Txistularis to hit the streets during the New Year’s Morning. In the air of that melody, we were picking up the wrecks of the night, like the garbage... [+]
We were yelling, “New Year, what brings us?”, around the first night of the year, at the preemies who crossed the road. Waiting for the foals, drunks, us. And as there was no runner or selfie yet, we would find most of the Russians who had gone out to put down the excesses... [+]
