Three years ago this book was first published and soon won several awards in 2013: the Aurelio Blanco award to the new authors, the April award, the Children’s Book Faire award from Shanghai to the best children’s album… Now, thanks to the translation of Ipar Alkain, we have the opportunity to enjoy in Basque after a successful trajectory in several languages.
The author begins the narrative with the phrase “before birth was different from the others”; and along with the words, in the section of such important images of the albums, we found seven eggs, six small white and the other pink. It is clear that it was not like others. And that first image reminds us of Ahate, the ugly one, because in Andersen’s well-known tale the protagonist was also “different” from his brothers, born from an egg… but in this book we will soon see that the protagonist is not a bird, it is not different, but very different. Because what appears next to six pups of birds is a monster, a pink monster.
From this point of departure, the author describes the differences and difficulties of the Pink Monster, using few words and giving images a great force of messages, obtaining a composition of information between texts and images. The different will have to start their way, “dreamed of finding other places”, and so it will start on a journey, moving away from that world of black and white, passing with great difficulty mountains, seas and even deserts, until in that black and white world the bitter sun, the blue of the rain and the world of colors appear. The rainbow at the beginning and the territory where the characters appear below. The Pink Monster, with the frog of three eyes, the Ball with a beast, the Yellow Bird or the Blue Monster, will come together and there, he will not be special, it will not be strange.
This Pink Monster is a message in favor of diversity, an album that expresses a clear message in its simplicity, which is seen in the image on the cover itself. With a touch of humor, with simple and short expressions, with few and clear ideas, without too many colors or elements in the images, Olga of God has achieved a simple and powerful story. A message in favour of the recognition of others in this world in which we live, of differences, of people, of races, of different tendencies, which offers us a better life. Until the end, an album that fosters this positive and open attitude, as in the image we can see the Pink Monster smiling with a Welcome sign and as their “six brothers” approach the distance, “The Pink Monster lived in this PLACE and never stopped smiling.”
And that is precisely the feeling that you want or arouse in us, the hope of a better world with a smile.
