For years the white marble of Taj Mahal has been yellowing, although from time to time it is given a special treatment; the skin of the famous mausoleum cannot be washed with water and made a kind of peeling, placing and removing layers of clay. Mike Bergin, of the Georgian Institute of Technology, decided to investigate the origin of drunkenness and concluded that marble is stained by very small carbon particles that cannot be dissolved in water. These particles absorb ultraviolet light, so it adopts yellow-brown color. According to the journal Environmental Science & Technology, pollution is endangering the brilliance of Taj Mahal and, more seriously, the health of the inhabitants of Agra.
