Requiem Shape
This year’s ABAO subscription cycle continues. On this occasion, instead of the traditional opera, one of the most beautiful titles for orchestras, choirs and soloists, within the Tutto Verdi cycle: The famous Requiem is Messa.
In these kinds of works, requiem, we always find a special emotion that goes beyond music. Mozart's réquiem of Fauré, they're exciting, they touch our inner sensibility. But with Verdi's requiem, and without denying its depth, a new feeling emerges: joy and strength. Instead of enhancing the vertiginous side of death, this work represents hope, peace, optimism. And it certainly offers beautiful music.
We could say that the version provided by the ABAO has been luxurious, as the soloists who have participated have been great: The U.S. Gregory Kunde has been heard on more than one occasion in ABAO performances. This season it was Manon Lescaut Operate that directed Renato des Grieux. As on previous occasions, he made a brilliant performance, with his lyrical voice, a sparkling spinto, all right. Next to him, we heard the great mezzosoprano Dolora Zajick. This singer is specialized in Verdi's roles, so as we expected, it didn't fail us. However, since I last heard her, I found her voice changed, less resonant, less powerful. Soprano Ángela Meade, for the first time in Bilbao, surprised the public with all merits. This soprano has a brilliant, powerful and safe voice. The only excuse was that I had felt a bit mechanical in their way of singing. And to end with the soloists, the interpretation of the lower Ildebrando d’Arcangelo was very interesting. It sings easily, moves easily in all records, for sure, and has a nice and fleshy timbre.
The Bilbao Opera Choir, under the baton of Boris Dujin, acted as always, well, strong. Perhaps it proved its quality in the most powerful passages, as in the powerful Dies Irae, but at times when they needed more refinement they lacked the mystical touch. Pity. The same could be said of the Verum Symphony Orchestra (founded in 2007 by Verum Bodegas y Vineyards), which did their job well, but, despite the fact that director Francesco Ivan Ciampa tried it, they did not reach the great orchestral color we wanted to achieve. Still, it was a good session.
