In the book Do not shoot ambulances we will find a dystopia. Contrary to utopia, a kind of prophecy of the dark society that can be situated in the near future. Some of the best-known literary examples are Orwell 1984, The New World Bai de Huxley and Fahrenheit 451 from Bradbury. And all three of them appear here in one way or another. Dystopias talk about the loss of humanization and are often used to pay attention to certain real-world issues. In this case, dehumanization is linked to the rigidity of social norms and new technologies. We have “prohibitions on the street” to make visible the cuts in rights and freedoms in the public sphere. Screens and telephones to reflect incommunication and the disappearance of relationships.
Within the dystopia we also have heterotopia, spaces that allow us to escape “other places” or norms: prison is the starting point and the hotel in the course of the protagonists. Or does the story start in the hotel and end in jail? In this book the author has experimented with the structure. In fact, there are four main paragraphs: III, II, I, and 0 chronologically located in reverse direction. The reader is given information in the form of drops and the narration begins at the end. The first and second parts are round, they could be independent. In the following, too much information may be given to us trying to link all the ends of the previously released threads well.
In the cold, slow and gray world that presents us, the protagonists are Gerard and Sylvie. If we look at the cover image, according to the Les amants de Magritte box, the theme and the concern of this book will also be frustrated desire or impossible love. But paradoxically, as the struggle for the creation of a new world is a priority in this dystopia, there is no room to build bridges between people, although in the world that one wants to create one wants to recover contact and communication between people and to leave aside the instruments and mediating machines, no longer being automatous and alive again. That is precisely what is being done in the fight until we get repulsive.
In conclusion, we very much liked the reflections we have intercalated on words, books and literature, in an attempt to value their strength and risk. Playing with the words we found: “All the words are falling down the slits of the brain, they disappear by letters in the black hole, by the back intermingled with blood, to the will and nowhere. Memory and pain of your hands. Freedom and ownership. Horror and water. Death and cold.” They also play with the names of the characters proposing an exercise of intertextuality. One of the characters has the habit of changing the names. He receives news from his favorite books, which may be known to the reader and which invite other books. It is an appeal to go out looking for secret messages from book to book.
