The “enchanted” Basque of Pamplona with the decision to expand the Basque offer in children’s schools
The City Council of Pamplona welcomed the expansion of the offer in Basque for children’s schools of 0-3 courses in the 2016-2017 academic year. This has been reported by Sagrario Alemán and Asier Biurrun on behalf of Euskalgintza de Pamplona. For twenty years only two of the 17 children's schools in Pamplona have given an option to educate in Euskera and the next course this offer will be extended to two other neighborhoods: To the San Juan Children's School and the Harresi Children's School of the Prince of Arrosadia. “It’s good news,” the spokesmen of Euskalgintza of Pamplona said.
“For many years the citizenship that wants to live in Basque has been excluded and their linguistic rights have been violated,” added Sagrario Alemán. “Throughout these years, hundreds of fathers and mothers have not been able to educate their children in Euskera in a cycle of 0-3 years and the few who have had the opportunity have been forced to choose: leave their sons and daughters in the children’s school of the neighborhood (close, comfortably…) giving up their education in Euskera or go and come every day to the Txantrea to be able to educate the child in Euskera.” The Germans added that “during all these years there has been a constant demand for children’s schools in Basque in all the districts of Pamplona.”
For his part, the mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asiron, recalled that in 1983, when the haurreskolak was opened in Pamplona, two out of eight centers were in Basque. Today, the ratio is two to four and “going from two to four is, according to UPN-PSN, to impose the Basque Country”, he critiques.
