A century after the publication of the theory of general relativity by Albert Einstein, the scientists of the LIGO observatory have directly detected the gravitational waves foreseen by this theory, which were detected for the first time indirectly in 1974.
What are they?
Einstein said that bodies deform the temporal space around them and that bodies that move form waves. That is what has been observed. The wave detected by LIGO, in particular, has been caused by the collision of two black holes in the area.
Black holes: if there are
Thanks to the measured signal, the existence of black holes can finally be taken for granted. So far, the only proof of its existence was its influence on other astronomical objects, but it was not total.
Is the detected episode common?
Scientists note that a new era has begun. Gravitational waves will allow you to know some facts about the hidden universe. But we do not know whether phenomena such as the one that has been measured are common or not.
