ACB-Arcelor: China is an excuse
ACB workers in the hands of Arcelor-Mittal have started an indefinite lockdown at the Sestao plant to keep the line of 335 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs that it maintains open. The Basque Government has met with Basque acerists to analyse unfair competition on this issue. For its part, the steel lobby, including Arcelor Mittal, has demonstrated in Brussels to put pressure on the European institutions on the streets to take action against Chinese dumping. The reason behind this whole movement is China’s alleged unfair competition, which aims to introduce steel products into Europe at very low prices and below production costs. Companies, the Basque Government and other governments have denounced the Asian country for the serious situation created.
Is China solely responsible, when Arcelor-Mittal has steel plants there? Is it not that the capitalist multinational has created a climate to make a major cutback in the sector? Do you want to close or relocate the CBA of Sestao and other local companies to move them to cheaper sites? And does the Basque Government, the BBK and similar bodies bear no responsibility for this? A few years ago, 20% of the CBA’s actions were sold, which made it easier for the multinational to take unilateral decisions.
The defence of the Basque steel industry will not be done with words or with insignificant meetings. Multinationals and large industrial groups have no commitment to this country, they only want profits for their shareholders. Selling the Basque share of the CBA was to put its viability at serious risk.
